About the chapter
A local community of scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, students, innovators, and curious people who believe that discovery is strengthened when ideas are shared.
Who we are
The Sigma Xi San Diego Chapter is a local community of scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, students, innovators, entrepreneurs, and intellectually curious people who believe that discovery is strengthened when ideas are shared.
Our members and participants come from a wide range of disciplines, institutions, industries, and backgrounds. What connects us is a common interest in science, research, technology, innovation, education, and the exchange of ideas.
As a chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, we are part of an international community with a long tradition of recognizing excellence in scientific research and supporting the responsible advancement and communication of knowledge.
Here in San Diego, we are building a chapter that reflects the unique character of our region: collaborative, interdisciplinary, innovative, creative, and engaged with the community.
What we do
Our goal is to create opportunities for people to learn, connect, collaborate, and participate. Throughout the year, the San Diego Chapter plans and promotes activities that may include:
- Scientific and technical lectures
- Research presentations and panel discussions
- Networking and social gatherings
- Student and early-career engagement
- Visits to laboratories, research centers, museums, and innovative organizations
- Community science and educational programs
- Discussions connecting science, technology, society, and the arts
- Collaborative projects involving our members and community partners
We also highlight selected science, technology, research, educational, and cultural events throughout the San Diego region, helping members discover the remarkable work already taking place in our community. You will find this month’s selection on the Events page.
Not every gathering needs to be formal. Some of the best ideas begin over coffee, pizza, or a conversation among people from completely different fields. Our aim is simple: bring interesting people together and see what develops.
Get involved
There are many ways to become part of the Sigma Xi San Diego community. You can attend an event, join a discussion, suggest a speaker, share an interesting local program, volunteer for a chapter project, mentor a student, propose a collaboration, or simply introduce yourself and tell us what interests you.
You do not need to work in the same discipline as everyone else. In fact, we believe some of the most interesting conversations happen when you don’t.
If you are already a Sigma Xi member, we invite you to become active in the San Diego Chapter. If you are not yet a member, we invite you to learn more about Sigma Xi, attend our activities, meet our community, and explore whether membership may be right for you.
Be curious. Get connected. Participate.
We are building the next chapter of Sigma Xi San Diego, and we would be delighted to have you be part of it.
President’s Advisory Council and Officers
The officers named first carry the chapter's formal responsibilities. The advisory council meets with the president through the year on programme, awards, and chapter direction.

Susan E. Smith
Member of PAC-San DiegoSusan E. Smith is a retired fishery biologist (research) who worked for NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) at its Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) laboratories for over 30 years, at the Tiburon Laboratory in Tiburon, California (1970–1990) and at the Center’s headquarters laboratory in La Jolla, California (1990–2005). She specialized mainly in the age, growth, and population biology of sharks, and in the spatial and temporal distribution of California Current euphausiids (krill). She also served as chief writer-editor and publicist for the Southwest Science Center’s four marine laboratories in California and Hawaii, and as special assistant to NMFS’ Southwest science and regional directors.
After retiring from NOAA-NMFS in 2005, she worked on contracts for NOAA/NMFS as a private contractor with Seiurus Biological Consulting, creating a fishery management plan for the conservation of West Coast euphausiids, researching and publishing on the age and growth of the shortfin mako shark, and publishing a new method for calculating intrinsic rebound potentials across diverse shark species. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and visual communications from Pratt Institute in New York in 1965, then switched careers to biology, doing college and postgraduate work in the marine sciences at Monmouth University in New Jersey and at the College of Marin and San Francisco State University in California.

Bobbi Baur
Member of PAC-San DiegoBobbi Baur earned her BA from SDSU and completed graduate work at UCSD in Political Science. She then changed direction, going to work in the San Diego shipyards in purchasing, sales, and quality assurance.
