Membership
Membership in Sigma Xi is by nomination and recognises demonstrated achievement in research. Election is for life.
Draft page. The nomination timeline needs confirming before publishing. Everything in square brackets is a placeholder.
Who is eligible
- Full membership is for researchers with a record of published or otherwise demonstrated research contributions.
- Associate membership is for graduate students, undergraduates, and others showing research promise.
- Researchers at any career stage and in any country are eligible. There is no residency requirement, though this chapter is most useful to people who can reach San Diego events.
How to join through this chapter
- Ask a current member to nominate you. If you do not know one, write to the chapter and we will help find a nominator.
- Send the completed nomination, with a short CV, to the chapter secretary.
- The chapter committee reviews nominations at its next meeting and forwards those it supports for election.
- New members are inducted at the annual banquet in May. You do not have to attend to be elected.
The whole process takes about [length]. Nominations arriving after [month] are usually held for the following cycle.
Dues and payment
Annual dues are set by Sigma Xi nationally and paid in US dollars (USD) directly to the Society; the San Diego Chapter does not currently charge separate chapter dues. Rates below are for fiscal year 2026 (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026), from the Society’s FY2026 renewal rates.
| Category (Full or Associate) | Annual dues |
|---|---|
| Regular | USD 135 |
| Emeritus | USD 75 |
| Transitional | USD 65 |
| Student | USD 50 |
Regular dues apply to all full or associate members who do not qualify for one of the reductions below.
Emeritus dues are available, by request upon retirement, to any full or associate member who was inducted into the Society at least thirty years ago and has reached the age of 65. This option cannot be combined with another reduced-dues option.
Transitional dues are for members who completed their degree within the last three years. The rate is limited to non-students for up to three years after graduation, after which the member automatically advances to the regular rate. Transitional dues are renewable but must be certified annually, and the reduced rate is not retroactive.
Student dues are available to any full-time, degree-seeking student and are renewable. This option cannot be combined with another reduced-dues option. Postdocs and medical residents do not qualify for the student rate but may qualify for transitional dues.
International payment cards are accepted. If card payment is difficult from your country, write to the treasurer and we will arrange an alternative. If dues are a barrier, say so; the chapter has a small hardship fund and the conversation is confidential.
Tax deductibility of dues and donations
Dues paid by individuals to professional, membership, or fraternal organizations are not generally tax deductible under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. If your dues are paid by a third-party business, institution, or certain kinds of trusts, they may be deductible to that entity as a business expense.
Financial donations to Sigma Xi are tax deductible. Financial or in-kind donations this year, and documentable planned gifts to Sigma Xi, may reduce your current income, capital gains, and future estate tax liabilities.
Because every individual’s financial circumstances are different, Sigma Xi recommends that you seek the counsel of your own tax advisor. For questions about dues or donations, contact the Society’s administrative offices at membership@sigmaxi.org, 800-243-6534, or 919-549-4691.
Transferring to this chapter
Already a member elsewhere and moving to San Diego? You do not rejoin. Ask the secretary to transfer your chapter affiliation, and you keep your election date and standing.
What membership gives you locally
- Standing invitations to chapter lectures and the annual banquet.
- Eligibility for chapter research grants and travel support.
- A route into judging, reviewing, and speaking.
- Contact with researchers at other San Diego institutions, which is harder to arrange than it sounds.
Common questions
Do I need a doctorate?
No. Full membership rests on a record of research contribution, which can come through many routes. Associate membership exists precisely for people earlier in their careers.
I work in industry, not a university. Can I join?
Yes. Research in companies, hospitals, government laboratories, and independent institutes all counts, and an area chapter like this one is designed for exactly that mix.
Can I nominate myself?
No, but the barrier is lower than it sounds. Write to the secretary describing your work and we will help identify a member who can nominate you.
I live outside the United States. Is membership useful?
Partly. Lectures are streamed and recordings are posted, and grants are open to student members regardless of location. Banquets, judging, and in-person events are not practical from abroad. If you are near a chapter in your own country, that may serve you better.
What happens if I stop paying dues?
Election is for life, but active membership and its benefits lapse. You can reinstate at any time by settling current dues; write to the treasurer.
